Veeam Cloud Connect resellers: Your questions answered

At virtualDCS, we’re pleased to say that we’ve supported a number of apprentices taking their first steps into a new career, and it means even more to us that most of them are still with us years down the line.

After the appointment of our latest apprentice, Megan Dunn, we had to go back to basics once more to answer some of the more common questions about Veeam technology.

This is when we realised that we often get a string of similar questions from new partners and Veeam resellers when they are first considering selling Veeam Cloud Connect services.

In light of this, we thought it would be helpful to address some of the ‘frequently asked questions’ around Veeam and Veeam Cloud Connect Backup in a blog.

What is Veeam Cloud Connect Backup?

Before we go into the specifics of what Veeam Cloud Connect Backup is, it’s important to talk about the 3-2-1-1-0 rule first.

First coined by a photographer in the US, the original 3-2-1 rule states the following: you should have 3 copies of your data, on 2 different media, with one copy offsite.

This rule was then later expanded to the 3-2-1-1-0 rule, which includes storing 1 copy offline and ensuring it contains 0 errors in the backup.

How does Veeam Cloud Connect Backup fit into the 3-2-1-1-0 rule?

Veeam Cloud Connect Backup is a feature within Veeam Backup and Replication software which enables customers to send their backups offsite to a Veeam Service Provider.

Having a secondary copy of the backup off-site and air-gapped helps minimise the risk of data loss in various situations – from natural disasters to malicious intruders and other security threats.

How does Veeam Cloud Connect work?

Veeam Cloud Connect Backup fulfils your customers’ need to protect their virtual, physical, and cloud-based data, without the cost or complexity of building and maintaining secondary off-site infrastructure.

With Veeam Cloud Connect Backup, you can offer your customers a simple and manageable way to protect their data, while also reassuring them that if the worst happens, they will be able to continue operating as normal with minimal downtime.

Veeam Cloud Connect offers a fully integrated, secure, and seamless way to transfer customer backups into the cloud. Your customers retain full control and visibility of all the information they back up.

What is Veeam Insider Threat Protection?

As part of the solution, Veeam Cloud Connect insider threat protection also offers an additional layer of security. When deployed, if a backup or specific restore point is accidentally or maliciously deleted from an organisation’s repository, instead of permanently deleting the backup, it adds it to a separate folder which retains the files for a dedicated period.

As standard, virtualDCS offers seven days of free insider threat protection with its CloudCover Backup service. This means if a backup was deleted, it would be stored in a ‘recycle bin’ for seven days before permanent deletion.

What is the Veeam Cloud Connect repository?

Your customers’ information is stored off-site within a Veeam Cloud Connect repository and removes any need to physically take data to off-site locations or rotating storage devices such as tapes.

Instead, the copies of in-house backups are automatically sent to our off-site data centres in the UK. A Veeam Cloud Connect repository is a secure, encrypted online space for your customers’ data and these servers allow your customers to safeguard their valuable data, from backup files and data to virtual servers.

How do I access Veeam Cloud Connect?

Accessing Veeam Cloud Connect is a simple and straightforward process that takes just a few minutes. All the customer needs to do is connect to the virtualDCS Cloud repository through their Veeam Backup & Replication console using the credentials provided upon setup.

Your customers can then access the Veeam Cloud Connect Portal online to monitor jobs and Cloud Connect usage statistics. The Veeam Cloud Connect Portal itself plays a critical role in allowing your clients to access their backups – even if their most important virtual machines go offline in the event of a crisis.

This means that as a Veeam Cloud Connect reseller, you will be able to offer your customers a service that provides a cost-effective way to manage and keep their data safe.
